Special Education Support Services & Programs

Welcome! The Sonoma Unified School District offers diverse support options to meet the unique needs of our students. Our services range from integration in regular classrooms with specialized support to dedicated programs for students requiring intensive instruction and interventions. We provide a variety of services including speech therapy, occupational therapy, adapted physical education, and more to help students benefit fully from their educational programs. Explore our offerings, such as the Resource Specialist Program, Special Day Classes, Home or Hospital Instruction, and Preschool Programs, to understand how we support every student's educational journey.

Regular classroom

  • In some cases, the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) for an eligible student is the regular classroom and may include consultation from a special education staff person or DIS services.

Designated Instructional Services (DIS)

  • Provide students with services in order for the student to benefit from their educational program. In some cases, services include speech therapy, adapted physical education (APE), occupational therapy (OT), audio-logical services, orientation and mobility instruction, and vision services.

Resource Specialist Program (RSP)

  • The RSP program includes students with mild handicapping conditions, who can succeed in the regular classroom when provided with one to three hours of special education support each day.

Special Day Class (SDC)

  • The SDC serves those students who require more than 50% of the day in a special education setting. Currently, the district has SDC programs at the Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. The SDC program serves students with severe learning disabilities with instruction in core curriculum with adaptations that are based on their individual needs. When possible, students are mainstreamed. In some cases, intensive behavioral interventions are implemented and, when appropriate, mental health services are provided.

Home or Hospital Instruction

  • Home or Hospital Instruction and services may be provided for those students whose physical condition requires confinement for prolonged periods of time (a minimum of three weeks), and who require long-term instruction at home or in the hospital. This service must be recommended by a licensed physician.

Preschool Programs

  • Preschool programs for children aged 3 years to 4 years 11 months are also available. Sonoma Valley Unified School District provides preschool services for Speech and Language (DIS) only. For other preschool services for students with more intensive needs, please call Sonoma County Office of Education Infant Program (Early Start) at (707) 524-2763 or Preschool Program at (707) 522-3272.
