Message from the Superintendent

Dear Parents and Community,

As we head into a time of showing gratitude and thankfulness, we want to thank you for your understanding as we continue to work through some difficult issues. The Board of Trustees are in the midst of making difficult decisions that will impact our district in the long-term and we want to ensure that our students stay at the center. It is an emotional time for all of us and definitely not one that is ideal. However, we need to ensure the fiscal well being of our district and simultaneously ensure that we continue to provide high quality learning opportunities for our students. This month marks the completion of our Portrait of a Graduate, Adult and System work which will serve as a foundation for developing a long-term plan for our district. These will help us ensure that we maintain and enhance programs that our students are interested in. It is unfortunate that we must go through some challenging times to eventually get back on track in making SVUSD a premier district. What lies ahead is the opportunity to realize the potential of our wonderful students. We have planned future opportunities to engage families and staff to chart a clear path for our schools.  By collaborating we can make it possible. I am thankful for the beautiful students that we serve, for our committed and dedicated staff, for the parents that want the best for their children and for the community members that support us with their time and resources. Let’s continue to show each other kindness and grace. Have a wonderful Veteran’s Day weekend and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families.

Jeanette Rodriguez-Chien, Superintendent

SVUSD Vision 2036

Thank you to everyone who participated in our third Guiding Coalition session! Together, we made great progress in solidifying our Portrait of a Graduate, Portrait of an Adult and Portrait of a System, capturing the shared vision and priorities for our students and community. As we move forward, our next steps include refining this work and presenting the collective thinking to the Board in November. We’re grateful for your collaboration and commitment to this important work, and we look forward to continuing this journey together.

World Kindness Day is November 13th

This day focuses on the need to be kind to one another so all can thrive in a global community. World Kindness Day began in 1998 at a Tokyo conference and has continued to be recognized since. Here are some ideas on how you can participate in World Kindness Day:

*Perform Acts of Kindness: Throughout the day, consciously perform acts of kindness, such as helping a neighbor, complimenting a colleague, or donating to a charity.
*Spread Positivity: Share uplifting and positive messages on social media to inspire others to be kind and compassionate.
*Volunteer: Offer your time to volunteer for a local charity or nonprofit organization that aligns with your values.
*Teach Kindness: Educate children and young people about the importance of kindness and empathy through storytelling or classroom activities.
*Random Acts of Kindness: Surprise someone with a random act of kindness, such as buying a stranger’s coffee or leaving an encouraging note for a friend.

November is National Homeless Youth Awareness Month

In 2007, Congress passed a resolution recognizing November as National Homeless Youth Awareness Month. This is an important time to highlight the challenges faced by young people experiencing homelessness. Additionally, this month serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about the issues that contribute to youth homelessness, including family instability, economic hardship, and systemic barriers. It further emphasizes the importance of providing support, resources, and safe spaces for our students. If you have any questions or would like additional information on supports for youth experiencing homelessness you can connect with your bilingual community liaison at your child’s school by calling the main office or contacting Jillian Beall, Director of Educational Services at jbeall@sonomaschools.org
