Message from the Superintendent

Dear Sonoma Valley Unified Parents and Community,

As we approach the winter break, I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for the incredible partnership and support you’ve shown throughout the first half of this school year. Although there have been some challenges to overcome, the commitment and resilience of our community continues to allow us to focus on resolving issues of the past to get to a better future. Only by working together can we continue to move forward in creating the Sonoma Unified School District that we all want and that students deserve. Your support is acknowledged and appreciated.

Over the past months, we’ve also witnessed remarkable achievements—from our amazing football team's success on the field to student leadership and advocacy, and creative expressions in the arts. Our students have demonstrated perseverance, curiosity, and a commitment to excellence that inspires us all. As we go into this holiday season, it is a time of reflection, celebration, and looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead.

As we take a well-deserved pause for winter break, I encourage everyone to enjoy this time with loved ones, recharge, and reflect on the goals that we want to achieve for ourselves and our children. When we return in the new year, we will continue to build on this foundation with enthusiasm and determination.

Here are some initiatives we look forward to in the coming year:

  • The launching of a Strategic Planning Process: Our board will work on developing a long-term strategic plan for the district that is centered on our Portraits of a Graduate, Adult, and System.

  • Planning the Transition for School Consolidation: We will be working on combining Adele and Altimira Middle Schools into one vibrant re-imagined campus. Beyond focusing on the logistics, we will be looking at creating a new culture and program possibilities.

  • Community Events: A calendar full of opportunities for families to connect, collaborate, and celebrate our shared commitment to education.

Your involvement and feedback remain critical as we work together to make our district a place where every student can thrive. Please feel free to reach out with your ideas, attend school events, or join us for discussions about our shared vision for the future.

Thank you for your continued dedication and patience. I am confident that the new year will bring greater success and joy to our school community. Wishing you a peaceful winter break and a prosperous start to the new year.

Warm regards,

Jeanette Rodriguez-Chien, Superintendent

California School Dashboard

The state released the 2024 California Dashboard last month. Dashboard is an online tool that shows how local educational agencies  and schools are performing on state and local indicators that are included in California's school accountability system.

Every school site in SVUSD demonstrated growth in at least one of the indicators.

  • Sassarini moved from green to blue for their Suspension Rate;

  • SVHS maintained their blue status for Graduation Rate with Creekside moving from orange to green and SVHS also moved from orange to green in ELA and red to yellow in Math;

  • Flowery moved from red to green in the English Learner Progress Indicator;

  • Prestwood and El Verano moved from orange to yellow on Math Indicator;

  • Both Adele and Altimira moved from orange to yellow on ELA Indicator.

While there are bright spots, our district still demonstrates achievement gaps. Based on CDE’s accountability system, our district is eligible for Differentiated Assistance with our English Learners, Long Term English Learners and Students with Disabilities. SCOE will be working with the district to provide strategic assistance.

State Performance Plan Technical Assistance Plan (SPP-TAP)

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 2004 mandates that states and school districts take proactive steps to address disproportionality. Disproportionality occurs when a particular racial or ethnic group is disproportionately represented in one of four areas:

  • Special education overall;

  • Special education within a specific disability category,
    Disciplinary actions, or

  • More restrictive educational settings.

In March 2024, the California Department of Education (CDE) identified SVUSD as “Significantly Disproportionate” for three consecutive years. This designation was due to the overrepresentation of white students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) being placed in Non-Public Schools compared to other racial and ethnic groups with IEPs. Such placements are considered more restrictive than the general education setting.

On December 13, 2024, the Board of Trustees approved a comprehensive plan to address this disproportionality. Over the next two years, the CDE will closely monitor the district’s progress in implementing this plan, which focuses on expanding our Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) for all students. The goal is to reduce the number of students placed in more restrictive learning environments and ensure equitable educational opportunities for all.
