Message from the Superintendent
Dear SVUSD Community,
As we prepare to go on Spring Break, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the achievements of our students and staff while looking ahead to the exciting opportunities and events on the horizon. Your continued partnership and support play a crucial role in making our school district a place where students thrive.
Celebrating Student Success: March is a busy time for our students, with academic competitions, performances, and athletic events taking place throughout the district. Congratulations to the SVHS Girl’s Soccer Team for winning the 1st North Coast Section (NCS) Championship. They advanced to 1st round of CIF NorCal Championships as an #6 seed. Congratulations also goes out to our Girls basketball team who advanced to the semifinals of NCS. They won the 3rd place game and then advanced to 1st round of CIF NorCal Championships as an #10 seed. The SVHS Boys basketball team also deserves to be recognized for their advancement to the semifinal of NCS. They won the 3rd place game and then advanced to CIF NorCal Championships as a #15 seed. We want to thank our coaches and Athletic Director, Mike Boles for working with our student athletes. We are so proud of our students who have excelled in their endeavors, whether in the classroom, on the field, or in the arts. Their hard work and dedication continue to make us proud.
Survey: We want to encourage families to fill out an important survey that will be used to develop our district’s Strategic Plan. The survey will go out the second week of April. This survey will be asking families for input related to what they want to see in the future at our elementary, middle and high schools. This data will be important as it will be used to begin our strategic planning actions. We thank you in advance and want to hear your input.
Spring Break is scheduled for March 24-28. We encourage families to use this time for rest and rejuvenation. Wishing you all a wonderful break!
Sincerely, Jeanette Rodriguez-Chien, Superintendent

Congratulations to our Varsity Girls Soccer team for winning the NCS D4 Championship!
School Consolidation UpdatesWe continue working on the transition from Adele to Altimira and want to keep all informed. Here are some updates for this month:
We have a Coffee Chat with Principal Snow and a Parent Tour where parents have had the opportunity to visit the campus, ask questions and become familiar with the school. We will have another Coffee Chat on April 23rd and May 14th and an additional Parent Tour on April 16th. We encourage all potential families and families from students at Adele in grades 6 and 7 to attend.
We continue to work on the seismic retrofitting process. At our last board meeting, the trustees approved to move forward with voluntary retrofitting to ensure additional safety measures for buildings determined by the district’s architectural firm. Work is scheduled to begin in the summer and will be limited in scope to have the campus ready for the first day of classes.
Our teachers and staff are preparing for move day. We have secured a moving company, have a schedule and have been delivering moving materials to schools to allow our staff to get situated into their classrooms in an efficient manner.
Summer school planning is underway. This year, we will be offering summer school to our middle school students with a focus on math. Students who are eligible will be notified soon and more details will be provided.
Transportation for Middle School
SVUSD plans to offer transportation to all students who live outside a 1.5 mile radius from Altimira Middle School for the 2025-2026 school year. This includes incoming students from Adele Harrison Middle School, current Altimira Middle School students, and incoming 5th graders.
More information about routes and transportation sign-ups will be provided over the summer.

Common Ground Assemblies
Our Special Education Department has been hosting assemblies presented by Common Ground. These assemblies have already been conducted at all of our elementary schools and at Adele Harrison Middle School. A presentation for Altimira Middle School is scheduled for April. The assemblies focus on inclusion, acceptance, and how to engage with people who may be different from you. Their goal is to create connections among all students, including those with special needs, and strengthen the belief and ability to truly include individuals we may perceive as different.

SEAL Training for Teachers in Grades K-2 Our Grade K-2 Teachers have been fully immersed in a year-long professional learning in partnership with Sobrato Early Academic Language (SEAL). Teachers have been actively engaged in learning and planning language- rich strategies to promote rigorous, joyful experiences.
California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress
Each year, students in California take several statewide tests. These tests, along with other things like grades, classwork, and what teachers observe, help us get a full picture of your child’s learning. The test results can show you where your child is doing well and where they might need a little extra help.
For more information about the test, including practice tests, sample questions, score reports, and other resources, please visit the CAASPP Starting Smarter website. The website is available in both English and Spanish.
Your child may be taking one or more of the following assessments:
Grades 3-8 and 11: Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments (SBAC) for English Language Arts and Math*
Grades 5, 8, 11 and 12: California Science Test (CAST)*
Flowery grades 3-5, Adele 6-8: California Spanish Assessment (CSA). This test assesses Spanish reading, listening, and writing mechanics for students in the Dual-Immersion Program.
The CAASPP tests will be given during the school day, and our teachers will be working closely with students to help them feel prepared and confident. We encourage you to talk with your child about the upcoming tests, and we are here to answer any questions you may have.
Thank you for your ongoing support in helping our students succeed!
